Millipore Presentation:
| Title: Development of in vitro tests to limit the dangers of cytokine storm Date: 25th February 2010 Time: 10:30 a.m. - 11 a.m. Speaker: Geoff Hale, Managing Director BioPharma Services Europe The memory of the Tegenero clinical trial disaster of 2006 continues to cast a shadow over the development of immunomodulatory drugs. The near fatal drug reactions were caused by massive cytokine release induced by triggering T lymphocytes. Tools to measure this reaction in vitro were available at the time but not applied appropriately due to limited understanding of the biological nuances of different immune interventions and lack of suitable regulatory guidance. Subsequent work has led to the refinement of analytical methods so that today we can better predict, if not completely eliminate, such risks. We will illustrate these pre-clinical studies with some examples of cytokine-releasing antibodies that have progressed successfully in subsequent clinical development. |
